Tears of anger and longing were mixed with Jesus’ tears of grief. Death had taken Lazarus, and it would take him again before it was all over. And ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, he had endured sin’s horrific destruction. But sin grieves God deeply and so do the wages of sin: death ( Romans 6:23). But he was “greatly troubled” ( John 11:33) and he wept. The only thing wrong with it is the past tense. So one would think that Jesus would be a confident, joyful calm in that storm of sorrow. Facing personal disappointment, grief, or setback, it’s nice to know that the Son of God has emotions, just like us. Except that Jesus had come to Bethany to raise Lazarus from the dead. I recall citing the verse in a seminary paper describing the improbably balanced dual natures of Jesus: fully divine and fully human. Jesus wept after speaking with Lazarus’ grieving sisters, Martha and Mary, and seeing all the mourners. To be healthy emotionally, we need to find language for our emotions we need to allow ourselves to fully experience the full range of emotions and we need to create safe and healthy relationships that invite others to do the same. You cannot be healthy in one aspect of your being while being negligent or unhealthy in the other areas.
It is my responsibility as a leader to encourage you and your partner and your children and your parents and everyone else you love to seek physical, mental, emotional health all in addition to spiritual health. This week’s epistle seems like an appropriate opportunity to use the shortest verse in KJV.Īs a spiritual leader, I have gotten it into my head that it is appropriate to encourage health beyond just the spirit. I don’t quote the KJV very often, but sometimes, it hits home due to cultural usage and history so much more clearly than some of the more recent academic translations. I like to joke that the King James Version of the Bible is the one Jesus used.
